10 Peruvian Amazonian SHACAPA NUT BEADS from Peru

Click photo for enlargement.

Native Americans throughout the Amazon basin have long used the seeds and nuts of a variety of trees and plants make necklaces, bracelets and other jewelry. This lot includes 10 nuts from the shacapa (tanoni) plant (Pariana spp.) from Peru.
Shacapa nuts typically are hollowed out and strung together to make dance bracelets or belts. The seeds knock against each other, producing a castanet sound that is a favorite of shamans who find it facilitates the induction of altered states of consciousness.

Shacapa nuts have a roughly triangular shape. Since these are natural nuts, there are variations in size. In general they are about 4 x 2 x 1 cm. The holes are drilled vertically, through the middle, and are small, about 1 mm in diameter.
