Native Americans throughout the Amazon basin have long used the seeds and nuts of a variety of trees and plants make necklaces, bracelets and other jewelry. These black seeds are related to solid red and red and black huayruros. They belong to the same genera (Ormosia) but we have not been able to determine their species. In Peru, the are called simply "huayruros negros," or black huayruros. In parts of the Andes, solid red ones are worn by single women, red and black ones by married women, and these solid black ones by widows.

This one-ounce lot contains about 30-35 black huayruros. These natural seeds vary in size, though generally they are about 15 x 10 x 7 mm. The holes are drilled horizontally, from one end to the other, and are small, about 1 mm in diameter.
